‘Tech-based Innovations for Climate Challenges’
Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) is participating in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 27) through a session titled "Tech-based Innovations for Climate Challenges” on November 17. The session is held at 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Pavilion in the Green Zone.
During the session, EUI will present the innovative solutions created by the winners of its climate change hackathon, Climathon. The solutions have been developed by teams of university students and start-ups from Egypt and Arab and African countries.
Climathon was launched by EUI, in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), on August 11 to September 29, as part of EUI efforts in contributing to the global response to climate change. Held under the auspices of MCIT and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Climathon acted as a platform for harnessing technology and science to produce effective solutions and address the effects of climate change.
The main themes of Climathon include Sustainable Cities, Clean Energy, Empowering Communities, and Water Stewardship. Winning teams in each theme are awarded financial prizes USD 5000, USD 3000USD and USD 2000 for the first, second, and third places respectively. Climathon will grant a financial award for the best Egyptian Startup in the field of climate change and sustainability. The award value is USD 10,000. This is in addition to the awards provided by AWS, including AWS platform credits, access to AWS Academy Learner Labs, advanced technology workshops, and mentorship opportunities; and recognition awards, including certificates and trophies.
Established by MCIT and the Ministry of Higher Education in the Knowledge City at the New Administrative Capital, EUI is the first university in the Middle East and Africa offering multidisciplinary academic programs in ICT and related sciences. The University boasts four faculties: Faculty of Computing and Information Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Business Informatics, and Faculty of Digital Arts and Design. It offers a wide range of disciplines to help meet the job market’s need of specialists in modern ICT fields such as Artificial Intelligence, data science, electronics and communications, business analytics, digital marketing, animation arts, user experience and video game design.
COP 27 is hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh on November 6-18. It is attended by heads of state and government and senior officials from all over the world, joining the fight against climate change. Egypt’s hosting of this momentous event reflects its tireless efforts in leading the fight against climate change and reaching effective solutions to mitigate the negative impact of this global threat through concerted efforts and joint action.
