The 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 27) is held on 6-18 November 2022, in Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Centre (SHICC). COP27 has four key goals, including mitigation, adaptation, finance and collaboration. COP27 is seen as a great opportunity to promote international climate action, and to unify the demands of African and developing countries, particularly when it comes to issues of adaptation to the effects of climate change.
Hosting COP 27, Egypt is ramping up initiatives designed to improve the country’s environmental credentials, and speed up its transition to a low carbon economy. Egypt’s COP27 vision is to move from negotiations and planning to implementation, with a clear recognition of the gravity of the global climate challenge and appreciation of the value of multilateral, collective and concerted action as the only means to address this global threat.
The Egyptian Presidency program at COP 27 includes a number of thematic days which will offer a venue for panel discussions, roundtables and side events on the margins of the official negotiations. The thematic days will enable a broad interaction among various stakeholders where the voice of youth, women, civil society and indigenous people will be heard. Among key focus areas will be the promise of innovation and clean technologies to the climate crisis. The role of science will also be highlighted in addition to biodiversity, energy transition, decarbonization efforts and finance.
In this regard, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and its affiliates will participate in a number of panel discussions, sessions, exhibitions, competitions and other events held in both the Blue and Green zones of the conference, tackling a number of topics, including AI and climate change, green data centers, smart management of e-waste, the role of digital platforms in raising awareness and others. MCIT is also playing a significant role in several areas regarding hosting COP 27, including preparing the infrastructure and organizing competitions and hackathons to find best solutions for mitigating climate change and fostering resilience.
Egypt is keen to promote implementing environmentally friendly policies and moving towards building a green economy. The Egyptian ICT sector has adopted a number of main action plans to contribute to confronting climate change effects. MCIT cooperates with the Ministry of Environment in several fields to use and adapt ICT solutions to protect the environment and develop policies for the safe disposal of electronic waste. This is along with reviewing the requirements for licensing the construction of cell towers to ensure that the safety of the environment is not violated.
In addition to using green sustainable solutions, Egypt has an ambitious plan for urban expansion within the framework of developing the national strategy for smart and sustainable cities. It entails plans to equip new cities based on environmentally friendly infrastructure and technologies, in parallel with the gradual transformation of old cities to more sustainable models.
