Egypt Participates in AccessAbilities Expo 2016

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) will take part in the first conference and exhibition for Peoples with Disabilities (PWDs) assistive tools entitled “AccessAbilities Expo 2016”, held by the United Arab Emirates in Dubai on February 9 – 11, under the patronage of Flydubai Chairman and Emirates Airline CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

AccessAbilities Expo 2016 is part of MCIT strategy to support and enable PWDs, promoting all those entities which seek to empower and integrate PWDs in the society. The Advisor of the ICT Minister for Community Services Abeer Shakweer will deliver Egypt’s speech in the opening session of the conference, addressing MCIT strategy, as well as efforts and achievements in the areas of empowering PWDs in the Egyptian society.

The conference will witness participation of large number of Arab countries and several international companies to take advantage of the advanced technologies and modern innovation of assistive tools technology in this area.

Shakweer has stated that MCIT will participate in this significant event with a distinguished pavilion to showcase the latest innovations in the field of assistive tools developed in Arabic through Tamkeen Competition for PWDS mobile software and applications, held annually by MCIT.

Egypt, this year, will also showcase a number of new innovations in this area, including the system of developing cognitive abilities for PWDs suffering from intellectual disabilities, that helps to develop PWDs skills. Moreover, it will present the electronic dictionary for the unified educational sign language, the first Egyptian certified dictionary used to eliminate the problem of differences in the sign language, which facilitates communication among people with hearing disabilities.

This is in addition to a deaf communication system through which people with hearing disabilities could communicate with others who do not know the sign language. Also, color and money readers for persons with visual disabilities will be showcased . Another application that teaches Arabic and mathematics basics for children with hearing difficulties and a technology application controlling the wheelchair via mobiles will be showcased as well.

MCIT will also present the project of the Regional Center of ICT for PWDs, in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), aiming to serve more than 50 million Arab people with disabilities. This emphasizes the Egyptian leadership in this field and provides networking opportunities with Arab states to hold numerous partnerships to serve PWDs in the Arab world.

UAE gives due consideration to the significant role played by Egypt in this field through a variety of projects and work areas, the most important of which is the “Annual Conference and Exhibition on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for People with Disabilities: Integration, Empowerment, Participation”. Held annually in April by MCIT, the conference will hold its next edition for the fifth consecutive year.

AccessAbilities Expo aims to stimulate government agencies and entities of the private sector to change their perception about PWDs and improve the services provided by these agencies to meet PWDs needs, improve their integration in society and enable them to overcome daily challenges. The first round of the conference is due to provide learning and networking opportunities for PWDs participant groups.
