ICT Minister Meets Major Chinese Electronics Companies, Discusses Cooperation in Capacity Building with HIT


The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has met with Xiaomi Vice President Alex Xing, and Head of Global Public Affairs Lancelot Liu, at Xiaomi headquarters in Beijing. They discussed the company’s expansion and investment in Egypt.

The main discussions focused on Xiaomi’s investments in the Egyptian ICT sector, and the privileges offered to investors in Egypt. They, also, discussed cooperation in manufacturing smart devices locally, and the possibility of cooperation with Egyptian companies.

In addition, they discussed Egypt’s potential of being a promising market for Xiaomi, and a starting point to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) markets.

Xiaomi is an international Chinese company specializing in manufacturing mobile phones and smart devices, with products available in over 80 countries around the world.

Moreover, the ICT Minister met with officials of BOE, specializing in Internet of Things (IoT) technology and manufacturing smart displays. They discussed the company’s investment plans and technologies, as well as future cooperation, in light of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) implementation of a number of digital transformation projects, and in pursuit of keeping up with global technological developments.

The two sides discussed cooperation in manufacturing electronics, in light of the privileges offered to investors in Egypt, with the aim to increase the added value and local components in electronics industry.

Talaat, in addition, met with the Dean of School of Electronics and Information Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) Gao Qing. They discussed exchanging expertise on the best practices in designing training programs. They, also, discussed cooperation in capacity building, which is a top priority in MCIT strategy to create a broad base of skilled calibers, trained on the latest global technologies, to meet ICT industry needs.

The meetings were attended by Vice President of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Hossam Osman, ICT Minister’s Advisor for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Golestan Radwan, and a number of MCIT officials.

The meetings come in the framework of the ICT Minister’s visit to China, taking place on August 5-9, heading a high level delegation, to participate in BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) Future Network Innovation Forum.

Talaat, on the sidelines of his participation in the forum, held a series of meetings with representatives of major ICT Chinese companies, where they discussed making new investments in Egypt, as well as cooperation in capacity building, modern communication technology, AI, and electronics industry.
