ICT Minister Inaugurates Social Responsibility Conference for ICT Sector

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Khaled Negm inaugurated today the first Annual Conference on Social Responsibility in ICT sector.

The conference is organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), under the sponsorship of Vodafone Research and Development and Telecom Egypt (TE).

The Conference comes as part of the implementation of the Social Responsibility Strategy launched by MCIT in 2013, to enable ICT tools to serve poor and marginalized areas, based on the development network of private sector, government and civil society organizations.

A number of officials took part at the inaugural, including the Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali, Minister of Education, Moheb El-Rafei, Cairo governor Galal Mostafa and Fayoum Governor Wael Makram, with the presence of the former Grand Mufti of Egypt, Sheikh Ali Gomaa as a guest of honor.

In his speech, Negm has ascertained that the Social Responsibility Strategy formulated in cooperation with more than 18 ICT entities, unifies visions and goals to promote the role of such a promising sector towards the society through solidarity among governmental and civil institutions for that purpose.

The conference is the result of a fruitful cooperation leading to the implementation of a number of projects in a record time, for example: providing technology support to 11 community centers in marginalized areas as a first step in Cairo governorate (out of 30 centers currently being implemented in next phases) with 110% achievement, in cooperation with 4 of the largest ICT companies: Cisco, TE, Vodafone and Etisalat.

Another project focused on establishing technology infrastructure for 20 orphanages, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Solidarity and IBM company. This is in addition to the e-portal to link civil society and charity together with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, in cooperation with the National Technology Group. Several awareness campaigns were launched by Mobinil to rationalize the power use.

Negm honored six companies implementing ICT social responsibility strategy during the previous period, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

During the opening session, representatives of Ministries of Communications and Information Technology, and Education signed a cooperation protocol with regard to supporting community schools, which is scheduled to develop the education environment of about 800 schools all over the country over three years.

This comes in view of the urgent need for the development of these schools, all of which are located in rural areas and marginalized areas. The agreement entails training of teachers in these schools.

The opening session also witnessed the signing of a cooperation protocol with Fayoum governorate on the development of 10 community centers to serve the people there. These centers provide technology training services and capacity building for youth and literacy programs, as well as training programs on computer maintenance and mobile phones. This is in addition to the IT renovation of 5 telemedicine units.

A discussion session tackled the ICT Social Responsibility Strategy. It revolved around the experience of the ICT sector regarding the launch of the strategy and activating a number of complementary development programs.

During the “Most Important Initiatives of the Social Responsibility Committee”, the community center model- in marginalized areas of Cairo- was showcased. Another session tackled the proposals of the strategy and new initiatives in this regard.

During the closing, participants stressed on the importance of pursuing cooperation among ICT partners. Such a model of cooperation resulting in real projects serving citizens is considered a successful example that should be applied in other governorates.
