UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27)


The 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 27) was held on November 6-18 at Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Centre (SHICC), under the theme “Together for Implementation.”

The Conference brought together heads of state and government and senior officials from all over the world to join the fight against climate change and reach effective solutions to mitigate the negative impact of this global threat through concerted efforts and joint action.

The Egyptian Presidency program at COP 27 included a number of thematic days that offered a venue for panel discussions, roundtables and side events on the margins of the official negotiations.

A key participant in COP 27, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and its affiliates organized, and participated in, a number of panel discussions, sessions, exhibitions, competitions and other events that were held at both Egypt Pavilion in the Blue Zone and MCIT Pavilion in the Green Zone.

Through its participation, MCIT led global talks on several topics, including the role of digital transformation in accelerating green transition, the role of the ICT sector in reducing GHG emissions, AI and climate change, green data centers, the smart management of e-waste, and the role of digital platforms in raising awareness of this dire threat, among others.

The Ministry also played a major role in COP 27. It prepared the infrastructure to ensure a smooth delivery of digital services and access to high-speed Internet and telecommunication services in hotels and tourist facilities. This is in addition to strengthening the mobile network coverage in Sharm El Sheikh to accommodate the huge surge during the Conference.

Moreover, MCIT developed the COP 27 mobile application, which facilitates participants’ access to a wide variety of services in the City. The Ministry also launched initiatives and carried out competitions and hackathons to find innovative solutions for mitigating climate change and fostering resilience.
