…improving health services by enabling Information and
Communication Technologies in the health sector
The Government of Egypt and its Ministry of Health have established several
e-Health programs to bring better diagnostic and health services to a wider
segment of Egyptian society. The Ministry of Communications and Information
Technology has facilitated the integration of ICT in health services, such as
for health administration, clinical consultation, and to bring continuing
medical education to remote or underserved areas of Egypt.
The principle objectives for the ICT for Health initiative are as follows:
- Extend better medical diagnostic services
to rural areas.
- Provide a training facility for the
medical community.
- Acquire international consultations for
special cases
- Reduce the cost of health care by better
patient management.
- Optimize utilization of expertise and
resources.
- Provide an advanced medical service in
emergencies
- Provide consultations for Arab and
African countries
- Create an electronic databases for
medical records
- Allow for medical knowledge dissemination
to the public.
- Provide an advanced medical service in
emergencies
The initiative is inspired by pursuing equal opportunities for health
services anywhere in Egypt, and expanding medical insurance for
all citizens. A database of medical history reports is being created to be
available to all medical centers, and in turn these centers will also be linked
on a global level to exchange knowledge and expertise. International standards
will be adopted as codes of practice in all aspects of the initiative, which
include ICD (International Codes of Diseases), HL-7 (for Health Level 7), and
DICOMM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine).
