Dr. Kamel and Eng. Hassan Sakr Witness the Closing Ceremonies of the 7th Egyptian Olympiad in Informatics

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel and Head of Supreme Council of Sports Eng. Hassan Sakr witnessed today the closing ceremony of the Egyptian Olympiad in Informatics (EOI).

The contest was organized by Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in collaboration with Ministry of Education, Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and Cairo University from 17-21 July at Mubarak Education City.

The closing ceremony was attended by President of Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport Dr. Mohamed Farghaly, Senior Advisor to Minister of Communications and IT and Head of EOI Dr. Ekram Fathy and a number of senior officials from MCIT, Ministry of Education and Supreme Council of Sports.

Emad William won the first place, while Ahmed Kamel won the second, Omar Ahmed Ali E’zazi won the third and Ahmed Salem Ezzat won the fourth.

The four contestants have been nominated to represent Egypt in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) due to be held in Canada this year.

A total of 96 contestants competed in the official programming contest out of 3000 ones. They had signed up from all over Egypt to develop optimal solutions for various technical problems that range in difficulty using algorithms and mathematical and numerical methods and computer programming languages over two days for five hours daily.   

A qualifier contest for designing and using robots (FLL ) was held under the auspices and supervision of MCIT, IEE and Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) for students under the age of 16 throughout the year.

In addition, two other competitions were held on programming and electronic games for youths and children under 18.

Moreover, a qualifier contest was held for Cairo and Upper Egypt and another in the Alexandria and Lower Egypt. A competition was organized for winners from both sides. A team from Asdaa Association for Serving the Hearing Impaired won the tournament, while Technofuture team got the runner-up.

The first tem participated in the world contents in the US and won two prizes, whereas the second took part in the Arab contest in Jordan and won the runner-up.

Technofuture team also competed in the world contest in Turkey and obtained two awards.

Dr. Fathi noted that electronic games contest have become a strong part of EOI through several contests in many games that are popular among youths and children.

Such games, he added, help them acquire various mental and motor skills.

According to Dr. Fathi, Egyptian youngsters have proved their potentials and capabilities on the international level through taking part in global contests.

Egypt’s Hisham Medhat won the first place in two consecutive years in the FIFA contest.

MCIT, Egyptian Federation for Electronic Games and Supreme Council of Sports cooperate in developing this activity in terms of usage, practice and application especially in education and industry. 

MCIT first organized the EOI in 2003. The ministry also hosted the IOI in 2008 which witnessing an unprecedented success.
