MCIT AND UNDP ESTABLISH EGYPT’S ICT TRUST FUND

    Cairo, 22 January 2002

H.E. Dr. Ahmed Nazif, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, H.E. Ambassador Hala Ismail, Director of the Department of International Cooperation for Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Antonio Vigilante, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative signed today, an agreement establishing a partnership to guide and manage Egypt’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Trust Fund.

The Fund’s main purpose is to utilize ICT to further development in Egypt by increasing awareness of its benefits, and by making information technology (IT) more accessible and affordable to all citizens.

The Fund aims to contribute to poverty reduction and job creation in Egypt by introducing computers and IT into the daily lives of its citizens. The Fund will empower communities giving them access to the information they require at their fingertips – or the click of a mouse.

The ICT Trust Fund will be financed by contributions from the Government of Egypt, private sector, bilateral and multi-lateral donors. During the first phase, the Fund will establish best practices on the following initiatives:

    · The ‘Smart School’ Network Over the next five years, this project aims at increasing one-to-one computer access for all preparatory stage school children in Egypt to reach 4 contact hours per week. The project also aims to create an industry of education technology service providers in Egypt. · Franchising Community IT Clubs This initiative will build on the IT Clubs project established by MCIT to develop a model tying the cyber-café concept to the need for community access to computers on a profitable basis. · IT and Adult Literacy To support the Government’s efforts to reduce illiteracy in the next five years, the Fund will support an initiative to use IT to eradicate illiteracy.
