Sports, ICT Ministers Discuss Technical, Technological Arrangements for Hosting World Handball Championship in Egypt

    Cairo, 17 August 2020

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, and the Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy have held a meeting, via videoconference, to discuss the technological and technical arrangements needed for the covered sports stadiums that will host 2021 World Men's Handball Championship, due to be held in January.

The 27th edition of the World Men's Handball Championship is one of the most prominent global sports events in 2021. It will be held in four stadiums: Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall, the New Administrative Capital Sports Hall, 6th of October Sports Hall, and Borg El Arab Stadium.

The Sports Minister ascertained that the Ministry of Youth and Sports cooperates and coordinates with all involved ministries and entities to provide the necessary supplies and needs for the championship, in an effort to have and organize the championship at the highest level possible, reflecting Egypt's ability to host major international sports championships.

Sobhy commended the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) contributions to the different international events hosted in Egypt, making all modern ICT tools available inside the hosting stadiums, according to the required international standards.

For his part, the ICT Minister underlined that MCIT is ready to provide the necessary technical support to prepare the hosting stadiums through equipping them with the equipment, technical requirements and necessary ICT services, in line with international standards. This is to organize the championship in a way that reflects the technological developments Egypt witnesses, in light of implementing many national projects that target building “Digital Egypt”.

Talaat referred to the collaboration between MCIT and the Ministry of Youth and Sports in a number of areas, the most prominent of which was providing the necessary technological services for hosting 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

MCIT, in coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, reviewed all the engineering arrangements for preparing the communication networks for the new sports halls established according to the International Handball Federation (IHF) standards. In addition, IHF and the organizing committee’s needs in terms of equipment, tools, Internet equipment and the ICT infrastructure preparations were reviewed.

Furthermore, the two sides agreed to provide the stadiums with the latest technologies, and equip the media centers with computers, laptops and Internet connections, as well as different logistics including modern printers, photocopiers and virtual display screens. This is in addition to providing the four hosting stadiums with wireless units with Wi-Fi; and MiFi devices for providing 4G Internet, as well as providing communication and Internet services and display screens for the venue hosting the championship draw ceremony, in September.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy ICT Minister for Infrastructure Raafat Hindy.
