    ICT Minister Meets Parliament ICT Committee Members to Discuss Building Digital Egypt Projects

    The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat met, today, through videoconference, with the members of the Parliament- ICT Committee, headed by MP Ahmed Badawy, in the presence of the Acting Chairman of the Egyptian National Post Organization (ENPO) Sherif Farouk.
    The meeting discussed the State’s strategy for building Digital Egypt and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) major projects for achieving the digital transformation, through rendering digital government services, developing the ICT infrastructure and improving the quality of telecommunication services. The meeting is the first in the series of meetings held by the Committee to follow up on the digital transformation file.
    The ICT Minister commended the fruitful cooperation between MCIT and the Committee, which resulted in issuing the personal data protection law, recently.
    The meeting comprised an open discussion between the ICT Minister and the members of the committee. Talaat presented the key features of the strategy of building Digital Egypt in terms of achieving digital transformation. He referred to launching phase one of the project in mid-2019 with a pilot project in Port Said City, providing 20-30, up to 155 digital government services.
    The ICT Minister added that the project will be implemented nationwide through cooperating and coordinating with all the State sectors, including the Public Prosecution, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Supply and the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI). Over the coming weeks, phase two of the "Digital Egypt" project will be launched including four sets of services, to render 70 digital government services, he added.
    Talaat also said that a plan is underway to connect all governmental buildings with a fiber optic network, with 5,000 buildings already connected in six months, and 35,000 more to be connected over 30 months. He referred to the efforts exerted for developing the ICT infrastructure and improving the quality of telecommunication services.
    In addition, the ICT Minister stated that another plan is implemented to develop all post offices by June 30, 2030, with working on increasing the number of post offices and looking into using mobile offices, especially during the disbursement of payments and financial benefits, where large number of citizens are present at post offices. Another plan will also be implemented for deploying over 150 new ATMs, this year, nationwide, he added.
    The ICT Minister also referred to the cooperation between MCIT and the Ministry of Health in implementing the comprehensive health insurance automation project in Port Said City, with the project to be extended nationwide, according to the Ministry of Health’s plan. He also presented the areas of cooperation between the two ministries amid the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
    For his part, Badawy stressed the significance of the digital transformation in Egypt and discussed its positive impact on the economy indicators, as well as its role in attracting more foreign investments through the robust infrastructure it will help provide, adding that it will save time and effort and help render effective and fast services to citizens. He commended MCIT efforts to coordinate with all the ministries to combat COVID-19, including increasing the hotlines for attending to citizens’ enquiries, facilitating the provision of tablets to school students and enabling free access to the educational websites of both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education to support distance education.
