    Cairo, 1 July 2020

The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker El Markaby and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat signed, today through videoconference, a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) on the technological accessibility to electricity services for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).

This comes in light of the implementation of the presidential initiative for empowering PwDs using ICT, to ease their access to different government services.

The agreement targets enabling technological accessibility to the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) e-portal and services, through technological applications, tablets and computers supported with touch-screen displays to serve hearing and visually impaired people, in 25 EEHC branches nationwide, as a first phase. This is in addition to launching the service of responding to enquiries and complaints of persons with hearing and speech impairments on electricity, through the National Relay Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

El Markaby highlighted that signing the agreement is part of implementing the State’s vision for leveraging and utilizing IT applications to serve citizens, especially PwDs, through enabling smart digital channels and using special modern applications allowing effective communication with hearing and visually impaired people.

For his part, the ICT Minister stated that the agreement reflects the State’s strategy for supporting and empowering PwDs. He added that the agreement also comes within the framework of implementing MCIT strategy for building an inclusive society using digital technology and communication tools and harnessing Assistive Technology (AT) to improve the quality of the government services rendered to PwDs and support them technically.

The signing ceremony was attended by EEHC Chairman Gaber Desouky, EEHC Vice Chairman for distribution companies Khaled El-Destawy and the Director of Social Responsibility and Community Services at MCIT Noha Rabie.
