NTRA, Four Mobile Operators Agree on Providing 250K Food Aids for Million Citizens Facing COVID-19 Repercussions

    Cairo, 24 March 2020

The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has coordinated with the four mobile operators in Egypt to participate equally in providing 250,000 carton boxes and bags of food to 250,000 families adversely affected by the preventive measures targeting facing Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), thus reaching one million citizens.

This comes in light of the directives of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat for supporting the state’s efforts in facing COVID-19 and contributing to alleviating the burden of citizens. It also comes within the framework of “Supporting day labor, a social responsibility” initiative launched by the Egyptian Food Bank, targeting delivering food aid to citizens suffering the economic repercussions of the preventive measures taken recently for curbing the spread of COVID-19.

The effective participation of the four mobile operators proves their community responsibility amid the exceptional circumstances that the country is going through.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) took a number of measures and initiatives to alleviate the burden of citizens and facilitate their daily activities, for following the precautionary measures taken by the state to curb the spread of COVID-19. On top of these measures comes MCIT initiative for supporting e-learning during the education suspension period, including increasing the download quota of home internet packages by 20%, and enabling free browsing of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank and educational platforms and websites, to ensure education is not affected.

This is in addition to increasing the number of post offices working an evening shift and until 6 PM, from 350 to 2000 offices nationwide, during pension payment days, as well as granting citizens 30 times the charged mobile balance as free minutes and units when charging using e-payment methods.

MCIT also enabled free access to the hotlines dedicated for the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), and added 200 service providers to increase the call receiving capacity.
