NTRA, Mobile Operators Agree on Granting Citizens 30 Times Charged Balance as Free Minutes, Units When Charging Using E-Payment

    Cairo, 19 March 2020

The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and the mobile operators in Egypt have agreed on promoting e-transactions by offering promotions on their services to citizens charging their balance using e-payment, either through the mobile application of each company or through the e-cash service. Citizens shall receive 30 times the charged balance as free minutes and units when using e-payment, with the offer being valid for a month and maybe more.

The aim is to encourage citizens to charge their mobiles using e-payment methods, without having to leave the house, and promote working from home. This comes in light of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaatís directives for supporting education, with school as university being suspended.

This also comes within the framework of the policies that target encouraging citizens to rely on e-transactions, and providing alternative technological solutions that save them from having to leave the house except when necessary. This is in addition to supporting school and university students to pursue their coursework, online, during the suspension period, as part of the precautionary measures taken by the state to face Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) launched a number of initiatives for supporting education during the suspension period, in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Technical Education, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, NTRA and the mobile operators in Egypt.

Initiatives include increasing home internet monthly download quota for all subscribers by 20%, at a cost of EGP 200 million, borne by the state; enabling free access to the Ministry of Education and Technical Education, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Researchís websites that provide the educational content for students, and providing special e-platforms for this purpose.
