    Cairo, 12 February 2020

The National Academy of Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities (NAID) has organized a first-of-its-kind ten-day course on computer software maintenance for the blind, joined by over 250 visually impaired people from different Arab states, on January 28- February 8. This reflects Egypts leading role as a specialized regional hub in this field.

Through the course, NAID aims to qualify and train the Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the Arab world, on the latest technologies.

Participants from 11 Arab states joined the course, including Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Algeria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Palestine. Some attended the course at NAID premises in Smart Village, others joined the online live streaming.

The Advisor to the ICT Minister for Social Responsibility and Services Abeer Shakweer stated that the course targets empowering visually impaired people to have access to the labor market through providing them with new skills in computer software maintenance. This is in addition to creating an accessible technical environment for the blind, enabling them to work on software and hardware maintenance, using screen reader applications and Assistive Technology (AT). The course also introduced the various aspects of computer software maintenance.

For her part, NAID Director Rania El Wahsh said that by the end of the course, participants acquire a set of technical skills, including understanding how computers work, preparing the right environment for each desktop or laptop to receive any operating system, installing and administering Windows 10.

This is in addition to protecting computers from viruses and hacks, encrypting data, checking the hard disk status, knowing troubleshooting techniques, as well as checking and dealing with the RAM and the processor statuses through software, and configuring computer hardware through different Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) configurations and software.
