    ICT Minister Witnesses Signing Agreement between TE, Ericsson to Establish Joint Training Center, Innovation Lab

    Cairo, 10 September 2019

    The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between Telecom Egypt (TE) and Ericsson, to establish a joint training center and an innovation lab to implant technology and create an enabling work environment for youth in technological innovation.

    The meeting was attended by Sweden's Ambassador to Egypt Jan Thesleff.

    The agreement aims at creating an environment to enable conducting research and applying Artificial Intelligence (AI)- based solutions in robotics, providing orientation sessions to enrich young people’s knowledge of AI, and organizing workshops to qualify them to be future trainers at the lab.

    This comes within the framework of the state’s initiative to provide centers for creative development and youth entrepreneurship and support academic research in the ICT field.

    The agreement was signed by TE CEO and Managing Director Adel Hamed, and Head of Ericsson Saudi Arabia and Egypt Mathias Johansson.

    According to the agreement, Ericsson will provide the software and hardware needed for establishing a joint training center and an innovation lab, while TE will equip the building with the necessary communication tools.

    Relevantly, the ICT Minister underscored that this agreement is within the framework of the efforts exerted by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) to support innovative thinking, and Research and Development (R&D) in AI, and create a base of skilled young people in this field, to develop the innovative technological solutions and applications needed to meet society needs in Egypt.

    Talaat highlighted Egypt’s keenness on adopting AI technologies and implanting them in different areas, to promote digital transformation and achieve economic and social development.

    For his part, Thesleff stated that he is proud that Ericsson, the leading technology company in Sweden, will collaborate with TE to provide a platform for AI and machine learning in Egypt. This will provide an opportunity for the two companies to work together to support youth and startups, thus Egypt can be an effective and leading partner in the age of AI.

    Moreover, Hamed expressed his delight to sign the agreement that will help provide the latest advanced digital services and empower Egyptian youth to keep up with the fast moving world towards globalization, through honing their skills in education, knowledge and ICT.

    Hamed, also, said that TE is committed to offer the best services for its customers and the Egyptian people through providing advanced technological solutions and establishing strategic partnerships with the world’s largest ICT companies.

    Furthermore, Johansson highlighted that investing in innovation labs is one of Ericsson’s priorities, and comes in line with Sweden’s vision to contribute to building calibers and developing skills of individuals and companies.

    The joint collaboration between TE and Ericsson in this field reflects the common interest to serve the community, and enhance the existing cooperation between the two companies that dates back to early 20th century, added Johansson.
