    ICT Minister Receives Google MENA Delegation

    Cairo, 23 June 2019

    The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has received a delegation from Google Middle East and North Africa (MENA), headed by Managing Director for Google MENA Lino Cattaruzzi.

    They discussed the company’s strategic plans in Egypt and Africa, as well as enhancing cooperation in technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

    During the meeting, Talaat highlighted the significance of cooperation with Google. He said that this meeting is in the framework of the previous meetings between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and Google, which aimed to boost the company’s investments in Egypt in various fields, including capacity building, technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and AI.

    In addition, the ICT Minister presented the legislative package that MCIT prepared during the last period to stimulate investment in the Egyptian ICT sector. He underlined MCIT keenness on promoting investment in young people through a range of initiatives in capacity building, technological innovation and entrepreneurship.

    Moreover, Talaat showcased the major projects and programs implemented by MCIT to create an enabling environment for innovation and qualify specialized calibers in ICT, to match between industry needs and the educational system outcomes, to keep up with the global technological developments.

    On his part, Cattaruzzi hailed the procedures that MCIT adopted to prepare a legislative agenda to create an enabling environment for investment, and organize the work of the companies that seek to invest in the Egyptian ICT sector. This included issuing the Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes Law, and drafting a personal data protection law.

    Cattaruzzi, also, hailed the community dialogue on the personal data protection law project, exploring the ICT companies’ views on the law before issuing it, with the participation of the Parliament ICT Committee, thus stimulating Google’s investments in Egypt.

    Furthermore, Cattaruzzi stated that for more than a decade, Google had served users and companies in Egypt through its products, services, and training on digital skills. He added that they established a successful dialogue with MCIT. During the coming months, Google will recruit a team to work at its office in Egypt, said Cattaruzzi, adding that they look forward to working closely with users and to launching more initiatives in Egypt.

    The meeting was attended by ITIDA Acting CEO Hala El Gohary, Director of Central Department for Information and Decision Support at MCIT Nagwa El-Shenawi, Director of International Relations Division at MCIT Mohamed El Gawsaky, Public Policy and Government Relations Manager at Google MENA Martin Roeske, and Head of Public Policy and Government Relations at Google MENA Selim Edde.
