Egypt Partakes in NETmundial Preparatory Meeting Held in Geneva

    Cairo, 28 August 2014

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Atef Helmy took part today in the events of the preparatory meeting hosted in Geneva, Switzerland to launch NETmundial for Internet Governance Cooperation and Development initiative, under the sponsorship of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The initiative was held in cooperation with a number of international high-level figures who have a prominent role in internet governance, as well as stake holders in this domain among whom is Egypt.

The new initiative aims at discussing global mechanisms to implement IGF outcomes which took place in  Brazil in April 2014.

In coordination with ICANN and within the framework of the WEF adopting internet governance issues comes the preparatory meeting within which the World Economic Forum outcomes to be held in Davos in January 2015 are to be set for.

The meeting also aims to formulate principles for internet governance, and suggests a road map towards more development of the ecosystem of internet governance.

Egypt’s participation in the international event comes in response to an invitation extended by WEF and ICANN to the country’s ICT minister to take part in this meeting to which a limited number of ministers across the world were invited.
Egypt is one of the leading countries in internet governance issues since its inception; this is in addition to its role in preparing for and chairing the WSIS+10 High-Level Event .

The meeting tackles the community’s feedback and discussions held in international fora including the international stakeholders meeting over internet governance held in Brazil.

The move taken by the US lately, announcing its readiness to give up its central role in distributing internet domain names, inviting concerned parties worldwide to consider new methods which allows the US administration to waive its role in favor of an international organization, is expected to be a subject of discussion.

Moreover, deliberations on means this meeting’s outcomes could contribute to the open consultations, initiated by the ICANN are anticipated.

ICANN is a non-profit organization seeking to strengthen partnership and equality on the international level among stakeholders, in cooperation with WEF. This is achieved through innovative and acknowledged mechanisms to tackle current and future internet related issues.

Moreover, ICANN seeks to activate initiatives through which international participation is enhanced to coordinate in internet issues, particularly in unrepresented areas, on an equal footing with other regions. This is in addition to improving trust in internet and its governance.

Egypt is expected to suggest, through its participation in this preparatory meeting, the prospect of hosting one of the regional preparatory meetings in this regard, and the possibility of appointing an MCIT representative in the higher steering committee expected to be formed for the support of the initiative’s various activities and carrying out the consultancy work. This is in addition to devising the recommendations of the initiative  in its final form beyond the first six months of 2014.
