    ICT Minister Meets AI Startups Representatives

    Cairo, 23 April 2019

    The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has met with representatives of startups specializing in Artificial Intelligence (AI). They discussed proposals and views on creating an enabling environment for growing the business community in this field.

    This comes in the framework of the State efforts to keep abreast of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, of which AI is the most prominent feature.

    The meeting was attended by Deputy ICT Minister for Human and Institutional Capacity Development and Acting CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Hala El Gohary, ICT Minister's Advisor for Technology Innovation, Electronics and Training Hossam Osman, ICT Ministerís Advisor for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Golestan Radwan, and Chairwoman of the Information Technology Institute (ITI) Heba Saleh.

    During the meeting, Talaat underlined the significance of the meeting and referred to the concerted efforts to prepare a national strategy for AI, in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, to be implemented over three to five years.

    In addition, Talaat highlighted the importance of sharing different views within the strategy, and holding periodic meetings for presenting views and discussing proposals that contribute to supporting the State strategy in this regard.

    Moreover, Talaat acknowledged MCIT commitment to building youth capacity in data science and AI, and encouraging the private sector to work in AI. He, also, highlighted the importance of increasing the number of companies specializing in this field, and referred to the cooperation with African countries in digital transformation projects, a great opportunity for business growth in AI.

    During the meeting, Radwan presented the main features of the underway AI national strategy. In addition, the ICT Minister listened to the startups representativesí views and ideas on the strategy, the most prominent of which was the need to focus on education and training to address the lack of manpower trained on AI, and giving startups the opportunity to participate in AI projects with different State institutions.

    Furthermore, Talaat called for more efforts to overcome the obstacles facing AI startups, and holding a series of workshops for their representatives. This includes a workshop organized in coordination with ITI, to define the youth skills that need to be honed to qualify them for working in AI, and design the curricula required for building youth capacity in this field. This is in addition to holding a workshop in collaboration with ITIDA to set the means of support that ITIDA can offer to startups specializing in AI.
