ICT Minister, World Bank Delegation Discuss Increasing Broadband Penetration

    Cairo, 23 April 2019

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has received a delegation from the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), headed by Lead ICT Policy Specialist and MENA Coordinator at the World Bank Carlo Rossotto. They discussed the different strategies to increase broadband penetration in Egypt.

The meeting is in the framework of the ongoing cooperation between the World Bank and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), especially in updating the broadband strategy through the World Bank’s technical support to MCIT and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) in this field.

In addition, World Bank officials assist MCIT in developing an economic model to identify the leading areas needed to increase the ICT sector's contribution to Egypt’s economic growth.

In this regard, the World Bank has organized a workshop to present success stories in communications services within the business sector, and benefit from models of different countries and investments to consider the possibility of transforming Egypt into a digital infrastructure regional hub, since the World Bank officials believe that Egypt can hold this position in Africa.

The meeting was attended by NTRA Acting Executive President Mustafa Abdul Wahid, Associate ICT Minister for Networks and ICT Infrastructure Hossam El-Gamal, and Director of the Central Department for Information and Decision Support at MCIT Nagwa El-Shenawi.
