MCIT Follows up Implementation of Presidential Initiatives to Empower PwDs

    Cairo, 21 August 2018

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has received a follow-up report, from the ICT Minister's Advisor for Social Responsibility and Services Abeer Shakweer, on the executive procedures of the initiatives, launched by President Abdel fattah El Sisi at the Seventh ICT4PwDs 2018 Conference and Exhibition, aiming at building the capacity of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and creating an enabling environment for them to participate effectively in society.

Shakweer stated that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has addressed many government agencies in line with the priorities of PwDs to start implementing the initiative of government websites accessibility for PwDs, which is one of the most important platforms that provide information about government services and how to obtain them. The initiative aims to design and develop these websites to facilitate their use and accessibility for PwDs through sign language for people with hearing disabilities and speech difficulties and through speaking programs for people with visual disabilities.

In this context, the Ministries of Social Solidarity, Education, Health, Higher Education, the Interior and the Cabinetís Information and Decision Support Center have been contacted to develop their websites as highly accessible websites for PwDs, as an initial stage.

Shakweer pointed out that international ICT companies are being addressed to identify the training packages of the National Academy for Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities, which is the first initiative of its kind in Egypt and the region.

Training programs tailored to improving PwDs skills and meeting their needs are to be designed, in parallel with capacity building programs for technology developers in the area of technology accessibility and assistive technology development through Training of Trainers (ToT) programs.

A number of programs and competitions have been identified to promote innovation among children and young people with disabilities in cooperation with major companies in this field.
