Egypt Partakes in ITU Council 2018 Session and UNCTAD E-Commerce Week

    Geneva, 19 April 2018

Egypt, represented by a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), headed by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser ElKady, is participating at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council 2018 Session— held on April 18-20, at ITU headquarters in Geneva— that discusses the ITU activities and operational plans.

ElKady will hold a number of bilateral meetings with ministers and government officials. He will also meet with the ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao, to exchange views and experiences on the relevant issues and discuss the Egyptian government’s preparations for hosting the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC)— one of the most important ITU conferences— due to be held during the last quarter of 2019 in Sharm El-Sheikh. The meetings will also discuss the promotion of the Egyptian nominations for the Plenipotentiary Conference, due to be held during October 29-November 16, in Dubai, and the exchange of views on the topics that will be discussed during the Conference.

The Council acts as the Union’s governing body that reviews the activities and operational plans of the Union and makes decisions during the four- year interval between the Plenipotentiary Conferences. The Council also discusses several topics, all of which comes within the priorities of the Egyptian ICT sector, including international numbering resources, compatibility and interoperability, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, digital financial services, bridging the standardization gap, and other emerging ICT issues.

Egypt is also participating in the fourth edition of the annual E-Commerce Week, organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which will be held in Geneva during the third week of April. The E-Commerce Week is a forum for various stakeholders to discuss the major e-commerce opportunities and challenges that arise and propose the actions that should be taken to maximize the benefits of e-commerce services for developing countries.
