    ICT Minister, International Firms Officials Discuss Promoting Digital Transformation Strategy, Electronic Manufacturing and Innovation

    Barcelona, 1 March 2018

    The ICT Minister Yasser ElKady has held a meeting with Antonio Neri, the CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)— a global provider of technology solutions and specialized software for infrastructure and network security. The meeting discussed means of effective partnership with HPE to implement the Egyptian digital transformation strategy. The meeting was attended by HPE Managing Director for the Middle East Julien Bertin.

    The meeting was within ElKady’s participation in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 held in Barcelona, Spain.
    During the meeting, ElKady reviewed the features of the digital transformation strategy, particularly in the development of telecommunications infrastructure— following the launch of the Fourth Generation (4G) services— the preparation of experiments and studies to launch the Fifth Generation (5G) services and the partnership with different sectors of the state to develop the services provided to citizens, including educational and health services. This is in addition to establishing the unified database and the start of applying the e-visa project. He also referred to the plans of action that aim to make Egypt a hub for hosting global centers of big data.

    The ICT Minister highlighted the economic reform measures implemented by the state and the new investment laws that aim to create a climate that attract more investments and make Egypt a distinct destination for establishing businesses and projects. He referred to a number of international trade agreements signed by Egypt, which will contribute to launching distinctive industries and exporting services to foreign markets. He also underscored investment opportunities currently available through mega projects implemented by the state, such as the new Administrative Capital, smart cities and technology parks that require the availability of smart technologies and innovative systems.

    For his part, Neri highlighted HPE's wish to expand its activities in Egypt by providing its expertise in modernizing government services. He said that the company is forging alliances with the world's leading technology companies to provide innovative and integrated technology solutions for governments to participate in implementing their digital transformation strategies. He, also, referred to the company's experience in the field of Internet of Things (IoT) projects and cloud computing.

    ElKady also met with the Director General at the General Authority for Regulating the Telecommunications Sector (TRA) in the UAE Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, and TRA Director of Governmental Affairs Jamal Al Haj. Both parties exchanged views on a number of related issues, including Over the Top (OTT) applications, and the development of the systems combating counterfeit devices and the rules governing the registration of mobile lines.

    Moreover, the ICT Minister met with the Vice President of Intel Caroline Chan, where they discussed the promising investment opportunities in the Egyptian ICT sector and the incentives offered to investors.

    In an effort to enhance cooperation and exchange of views on the new global trends in the field of ICTs and expand the investments of international companies operating in the Egyptian telecommunications sector, ElKady met with Orange Deputy Chief Executive Marc Rennard, and the CEO of Orange Egypt for Telecommunications Jean-Marc Harion. He also held another meeting with Vodafone Group External Affairs Director Joakim Reiter.

    Furthermore, the ICT Minister met with Ericsson Senior Vice President and Head of Market Area Middle East & Africa Rafiah Ibrahim and Ericsson Business Area Digital Services Accelerators Jan Karlsson. The meeting discussed means of boosting cooperation through increasing the company's global activities in Egypt, in network support areas and provision of technological solutions and services to operators operating in Egypt.

    ElKady also met with a number of ZTE officials, where the meeting discussed enhancing cooperation in the fields of manufacturing, technological innovation centers and increasing the company's international investments in Egypt.
