    Cairo , 30 October 2006

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Tarek Kamel is heading today for Greece leading a high level official delegation to participate in the inaugural meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) held from October 30 - November 2 in Athens. Dr. Kamel will be giving a speech - during the opening session - on the importance of internet governance and the pivotal role Egypt plays in activating this field. Entities recognized by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)  and organizations experienced in internet governance are taking part in the IGF.

Minister Kamel will also contribute to the forum''s activities which involve the discussion of: "Openness - freedom of expression, free flow of information, ideas and knowledge", "Security - Creating trust and confidence through collaboration", diversity Ė promoting multilingualism and local content" and "access - internet connectivity: policy and cost".

Dr. Kamelís visit also encompasses holding meetings and signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Greek side in the domains of fiber optics centers, operating international portals, bilateral cooperation in line with the European Unionís programs of ICT and e-content, e-learning, skill development and research and development (R&D) through the Egyptian model of excellence centers, technology incubators and technology development funds. These are in addition to reviewing mutual suggestions by participating in the EUís programs of the R&D expertise exchange with SMEs working on ICT and training.

A number of workshops will be held on the sidelines of the IGF. Representatives of governments and private sector companies will take part in these workshops and discuss issues related to the main subjects of the forum. On his part, Minister Kamel will give a word during the Egyptian workshop on language diversity. The Egyptian task force has earlier suggested this subject and it has been formulated jointly with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ICANN and the UNESCO, which focus on the challenges and opportunities of internet internationalization.

It is worth mentioning that during the second stage of the WSIS held in Tunisia in 2005, the internet governance task force stressed on the necessity of forming a world forum to discuss all issues related to the internet including the general internet policy. Two discussion rounds were held in Geneva to formulate the work agenda of IGFís first meeting during which the UN secretary general Koffi Annan called on governments, private sector companies and civil society organizations to take part in this forum, which is now held in Athens.
