At Regional ICT Accessibility Week, Egypt Underlines Promoting PwDs Inclusion

    Cairo, 1 October 2017

    - Egypt’s Government, MCIT are keen on creating an inclusive society for PwDs
    - Egypt supports PwDs empowerment through providing ICT training services, programs and grants

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser ElKady— in a speech delivered, on behalf of him, by the ICT Minister’s Advisor for Social Responsibility and Services Abeer Shakweer—has underscored that the Egyptian government and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) are keen on creating an inclusive society for People with Disabilities (PwDs). The speech was delivered during the closing of the Regional ICT Accessibility Week, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in the Arab states, in cooperation with UNESCO, MCIT, and the American University in Cairo (AUC), aiming to raise awareness across the region of the critical role played by information for PwDs through using ICTs.

MCIT has made a lot of progress during the previous years to integrate PwDs into the society through various projects and programs, and has developed legislative frameworks to build an enabling environment to ensure access for PwDs to ICTs, in cooperation with the ITU. This is in addition to the policy that aims at providing technology services in education, and supporting innovators to develop assistive technology in Arabic through “Tamkeen”—a pioneering competition on the regional and international levels. MCIT, also, provided training and employment grants to PwDs and promoted the technological availability in special education and integration schools.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary-General of the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) Ashraf Marei, President of AUC Francis J. Ricciardone and the Adviser for Communication and Information Communication and Information Sector at UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo and ITU Representative Paul Hector.

Shakwair also participated in the high-level meeting, during which she showcased the efforts employed by the Government, represented by MCIT, to overcome the challenges facing the empowerment of PwDs at the regional level. The efforts include developing assistive technology, building capacities of PwDs and integrating them into the labor market. This is in addition to raising awareness of the significance of technology availability and access to ICTs.

The Regional ICT Accessibility Week aims to support the implementation of the ITU-MCIT regional Arab initiative on access to ICT for PwDs and marks the celebration on 28 September of UNESCO “International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI)”, under the title “ensuring access to telecommunications/ICTs, in particular for persons with disabilities”.
