    WSIS 2017

    Last updated: 18 June 2017

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2017, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was held on June 12-16 at ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Egypt took part in the Forum and won the WSIS prize— for the second consecutive year— for the country’s National Program for ICT Accessibility in Education for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), implemented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) nationwide. The prize is part of ITU efforts to support outstanding projects that utilize ICT applications to drive social, educational and economic development within communities.

The ICT Accessibility in Education for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) program aims at facilitating the educational process for students with disabilities through developing the policy of ICT accessibility in education for students with disabilities; providing access to technology for integration and special education schools; and providing training for teachers on the use of assistive technology to improve the educational system proficiency for students with disabilities.

The overall theme for WSIS Forum 2017 was Information and Knowledge Societies for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The WSIS Forum represents the world's largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ multi-stakeholder community and is a global multi-stakeholder platform facilitating the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines for advancing sustainable development.
