    Premier Opens Sixth ICT4PwDs 2017 Conference and Exhibition

    Under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail inaugurated the sixth annual ICT4PwDs 2017 Conference and Exhibition held on May 8-9, in Cairo, Egypt.

    Organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) under this year’s theme “Integration, Empowerment, Participation”, ICT4PwDs 2017 aims at supporting and empowering Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) through ICT tools in all areas of life. It aims also to enhance the assistive technology industry, which contributes substantially to facilitating PwDs lives.

    The Conference was attended by the Ministers of Communication and Information Technology, Social Solidarity, Local Development; the Governors of Cairo, Giza, the Red Sea and Fayoum; and the Ambassadors of the UAE, Algeria and the European Union in Egypt. This is in addition to the Deputy Resident Representative of UNICEF, the Secretary General of the National Council for Disability Affairs, an elite of experts and public figures and a group of PwDs.

    In his speech delivered at the opening session, Ismail talked about the significance of the Conference, stating that it is one of the communication channels with PwDs. The ICT Minister Yasser ElKady, in his speech, announced that MCIT is to support and fund 50 new technology projects in Arabic, developed by the minds of Egyptian youth of Tamkeen competition for innovation in PwDs software development and mobile applications.

    During the Conference, Ismail launched the Egyptian ICT access policy, developed by MCIT in cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). MCIT will provide support and guidance to the brotherly Arab countries in order to develop their policies to enable PwDs access to ICTs.

    Moreover, the Prime Minister handed over a number of graduation certificates of MCIT grant for training and employment for PwDs. This year, the Project witnessed an expansion to serve citizens of Assiut, Qena, Aswan and the New Valley governorates.

    Following the opening session, Ismail inaugurated the exhibition of assistive technologies held on the sidelines of the Conference, which aims to promote the industry of these technologies, contributing greatly to facilitating PwDs lives.
