    SECC Holds Seminar on Egypt-SPIN

    Software Engineering Competence Center (SECC), an affiliate of Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), held a seminar on Egypt- Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) in the Smart Village. The seminar tackled SECCís support of applying Information Technology Infrastructure Library Services (ITIL).

    A total of 90 specialists representing 60 specialized Egyptian information and communication technology (ICT) companies attended the seminar.

    Launched by SECC in December 2002, Egypt-SPIN is a network of a group of Egyptian software companies interested in the software process improvement network (SPI). The US Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University accredited Egypt-SPIN as a focal point within the Global SPIN model. SEI is the official sponsor of the international network.

    Egypt-SPIN aims to disseminate knowledge and expertise as well as interact with professional entities operating in the field around the world.

    Every regional software process improvement (SPI) network is different from another based on the vision of its institution and the societyís needs. These networks consist of professionals who belong to different sectors, the industry itself, the government and universities. Over 130 networks are currently available worldwide.

    Egypt-SPIN is an efficiently means of exchanging views and information. SECC releases a quarterly newsletter published by a number of experts in the field. It includes subjects about training and news related to this domain.
     
    SECC Chairman Dr. Gamal Mohamed Ali spoke at the seminar commencement about the centerís role in supporting Egypt-SPIN. He confirmed that the network depends on Egyptian professionals who work on software development. He called on the attendees to give their views over the future themes of the networkís meetings.

    SECC had suggested that the theme of this meeting was to be ITIL. It adopts the model of ITIL, the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world.

    ITILģ is a trademark registered for the UKís Office of Government Commerce (OGC). It describes the organization of IT resources to deliver business value, and documents processes, functions and roles in IT Service Management (ITSM).

    It is the most preferred approach adopted by several IT-related sectors like call centers, internet service providers (ISPs), application service providers (ASP), training institutes and manufacturers of electronic devices.

    By adopting ITIL, SECC aims to build the capacities of IT service management at Egyptian companies that the program targeted through applying this modelís best practices.

    The program first kicked off at SECC in 2009 and lasted for one year. MobiNil, ACT and Raya, Egabi solutions and ITS are the five companies that used the program in the pilot phase.

    Through the implementation of ITIL, organizations can consolidate services and IT operations of their own in order to raise the quality of services, improve the performance of applications and reduce operating costs.
