Egypt Partakes in SAMENA Leadersí Summit 2020

    Date published: 9 July 2020

Egypt, represented by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), participated in the South Asia, Middle East and North Africa (SAMENA) Telecommunications Council Leaders' Summit 2020, held virtually on July 9, under the theme ď5G+X: Harnessing 5G Across Industries for Investment RevivalĒ.
The summit tackled the global impact of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic on different sectors, and the role of the ICT sector in mitigating this impact.
NTRA Executive President Hossam El-Gamal participated in the senior speakers panel discussion that dealt with the impact of COVID-19 on the digital infrastructure. The panel was joined by Queen Silvia of Sweden; the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Houlin Zhao; the Deputy Minister for Telecom and Infrastructure at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Saudi Arabia Bassam Al-Bassam; the Special Assistant to Pakistani Prime Minister on Digital Pakistan Initiative  Tania Aidrus; the Acting General Director of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in Bahrain Shaikh Nasser Al-Khalifa; and the Chairman of the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19) Amr Badawi.
This yearís summit had a distinctive nature and objective, as the world goes through unique humane and health circumstances that forced new constants and approaches in various aspects of life. These circumstances required families to rely, mainly and largely, on ICT services, as they work, study and shop.
The measures and initiatives that the Egyptian government had adopted were tackled. They aim to ensure a continuous rendering of educational, health, economic, social and other services to families. This included increasing home Internet download quota to meet the familiesí growing needs, enabling free access to educational websites, allowing free of charge e-transactions, and providing doctors, nurses and staff working in isolation hospitals free airtime and telecommunication services.

The pandemic, despite its devastating impact, played a remarkable role in emphasizing the significance of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in providing unconventional solutions to deal with it.
One of the most important learned lessons is recognizing the dire need for synergizing efforts and enhancing cooperation between stakeholders to develop the best solutions and practices to deal with such crises.
SAMENA is a regional organization that deals with telecommunication issues in the Middle East, through the events and activities it carries out. It aims to create an enabling environment for decision-making among the ICT sector leaders and different stakeholders, from companies, governments and organizations, as well as academics.
