NTRA Adopts Measures to Promote Recharging Mobile Balance Using E-Payment

    Date published: 1 July 2020
The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has adopted a number of measures to limit the use of mobile phone balance recharging traditional methods, such as scratch cards, and replace them with e-payment methods, in coordination with the four mobile operators.

This comes in line with the State’s efforts to attain financial inclusion, and in NTRA keenness to promote the use of electronic transactions to ease access of citizens to telecommunication services.

Pursuant to these measures, the mobile operators are to stop issuing plastic scratch cards of EGP50 and more, and continue accepting the same value cards that are currently available in the market, with vendors, distributors or subscribers, until the card validity expires. Scratch cards of other categories shall still be provided, besides e-payment methods.

It is worth mentioning that NTRA launched a relevant initiative, in March, involving agreeing with the mobile operators to provide mobile phone subscribers 30 times the recharged balance as free minutes or units when recharging using e-payment methods.
