IGF 2017 First Open Consultations, MAG Meeting Hold in Geneva

    Date published: 1 March 2017

The first Open Consultations and the Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2017 preparatory cycle will be held on March 1-3 at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), Switzerland. The main purpose of the three-day meeting is to take stock of the IGF 2016 meeting and intersessional processes, as well as taking discussions on the program and structure of IGF 2017 and other ongoing IGF activities forward.

IGF is a multi-stakeholder space for dialogue regarding policies adopted in 2006 by the United Nations General Secretariat. The IGF was first convened in 2005 by the United Nations General Assembly. With the renewal of its mandate by the United Nations in December 2015, the IGF consolidates itself as a platform to bring people together from various stakeholder groups as equals. At their annual meeting delegates discuss, exchange information and share good practices with each other.

The IGF facilitates a common understanding of how to maximize Internet opportunities and address risks and challenges that arise. The IGF is also a space that gives developing countries the same opportunity as wealthier nations to engage in the debate on Internet governance and to facilitate their participation in existing arrangements.
