Egypt Partakes in Regional Preparatory Meeting for WTDC-17 for Arab States

    Date published: 29 January 2017

Egypt, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), will participate in the Regional Preparatory Meeting for the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-17) for the Arab States (RPM-ARB), taking place in Khartoum, Sudan on 30 January- 1 February. The meeting is preceded by the Regional Development Forum for the Arab States (RDF-ARB) on January 29. Both events are organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in coordination with the National Telecommunications Corporation (NTC) of Sudan.

RPM aims at engaging members in the preparations of WTDC-17 in order to achieve regional coordination before the Conference itself. It also seeks to identify issues at the regional level that need to be addressed to foster the development of telecommunications and ICTs, taking into account the most pressing needs faced by the Member States and Sector Members of the region.

RDFs provide an opportunity for high-level dialogue, cooperation and partnerships among telecommunication and ICT policy-makers, regulators, industry, academia, regional and international development agencies and organizations on specific regional telecommunication and ICT issues.

Outcomes of RPMs will be consolidated at the inter-regional coordination meeting and discussed at the Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG) 2017 in May. The outcomes of TDAG will be submitted to WTDC-17 as draft documents for consideration.

Egypt, represented by MCIT, occupies the position of the vice-president of the Arab group which is responsible for the Conference preparation. It also presides the working group for preparing for the Arab initiatives to be presented at WTDC-17. Egypt is one of the oldest members in the ITU and has 16 sector members from the private sector in the union. It is also a founding member of the “Partners to Connect the World” initiative and it chairs the ITU Council Working Group on International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs). Egypt is an active participant in the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) activities and it has succeeded in establishing the first regional subgroup in SG2. This, in turn, further enhances the regional presence of ITU and increases its involvement with developing countries in Africa and the Arab World.

The World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-17) will be convened in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 9 to 20 October 2017 following the invitation of the Government of Argentina and the approval by the Council with the concurrence of a majority of the Member States of ITU. The theme of WTDC-17 is "ICT for Sustainable Development Goals" - ICT4SDGs.
