Egypt Participates in Second Meeting of Internet Governance Forum (IGF)

    Date published: 17 November 2007

A high level Egyptian delegation has participated in the second Meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IFG) held in the Brazilian city of Rio De Janeiro from 12-15 November.

IFG 2007 aims to support the United Nations Secretary-General in carrying out the mandate from the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) with regard to convening a new forum for multi-stakeholder policy dialogue.

The forum brings to discussions a wide range of issues related to Internet Governance, and, where appropriate, makes recommendations to the international community. The working and function of the Forum is multilateral, multi-stakeholder, democratic and transparent.

Egypt has been playing a vital role in the proceedings of IGF on the regional level as a pioneering country in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector in the African Continent.

During the IGF preparatory meeting in September 2006, Egypt sought to draft a joint formula between the African countries highlighting the continent's priorities and challenges with regard to Internet Governance.

Meanwhile, the Advisory Council commissioned by UN Secretary to hold the IGF decided to choose Egypt to host the IFG in 2009. This echoes Egypt's abilities and potentials qualifying it to develop the African ICT sector and represent the Internet issues on both the Arab and African levels.
