    Egypt Participates at IGF 2014

    Date published: 1 September 2014

The ninth Annual Internet Governance Forum (IGF) meeting will be held in Istanbul, Turkey on 2-5 September 2014 while a preparatory meeting takes place on September 1.

The IGF 2014 overarching theme is: "Connecting Continents for Enhanced Multi-stakeholder Internet Governance". The forum covers internet policies with a focus on WSIS+10  High-Level Event outcomes, to enable access, create content and enhance internet and human rights.

The participation of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) at IGF—one of the world’s fora in which Egypt has always been keen to participate since its inception witnessing discussions of the international arena over internet governance—ascertains Egypt’s role in this significant forum.

Around 120 workshops are to be organized in parallel with seven official sessions in most of which MCIT, along with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) internet governance team, takes part.

A joint workshop with Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) about the enrichment of e-content takes place on September 2. Suggested by MCIT to the ITU secretariat, the workshop discusses “digital content” issues enlisted as one of the main topics in 2014 IGF agenda.

The workshop gathers prominent figures like BA director Ismail Serag EL-Din, in addition to global experts from UNESCO, Congress, Museum Victoria in Australia, OECD, ESCWA and UNECA.

Recommendations are to be submitted to positively contribute to the  creation of an environment empowering the development of local content.

MCIT organizes another workshop, in cooperation with Child Online Protection (COP) coalition, as well as a workshop with OECD on internet issues.
