    Tarek Kamel in Athens: Egypt hosts the Regional office of the ICANN

    Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has finished the preparatory procedures of hosting the regional office of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Egypt's technology park, the Smart Village. An MCIT expert has been assigned to manage the new ICANN office, while another has joined the internet governance task force, which is an international consultative council that recommends the general policies of internet governance and policy progress that can enhance the different aspects of the developmental process.

    In his speech before the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) - in the presence of 1500 participants belonging to governments, civil society organizations, and private sector companies, Dr. Tarek Kamel, Egyptian Minister of CIT stressed on Egypt''''s role in developing internet services on the international level
    It''''s worth mentioning that Egypt has been one of the first countries that suggested the foundation of a consultative internet council and a permanent forum for governments, private sector companies and civil society organizations.

    The IGF was inaugurated yesterday by Konstantinos Karamanlis, Greek Prime Minister, in the presence of Michael Liapis, Greek Minister of Transport and Communications, and Yoshio Utsumi, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union and Vint Cerf, the founding father of the internet and the ICANN Chairman.

    Kamel called on the global community to focus on the multilingualism, whether in web addresses or e-content, which in turn serves the different global communities in the developmental process and the launch of initiatives in this field. Kamel further stressed on Egypt's capability in playing a key regional role in this domain. Minister Kamel was the only foreign minister who gave the opening speech along with his counterpart of the hosting country, Greece.
