SECC R&D Department: the First Government Body in Egypt to Receive the Quality Certificate of CMMI-DEV

    Date published: 29 March 2012

Research and Development Department at Software Engineering Competence Center (SECC), affiliated to the Information Technology Development Agency (ITIDA), is awarded with the integrated quality certificate for development operations CMMI-DEV of second technical level, in the field of developing integrated systems and mobile applications.

This is the first time a government body receives such a certificate in Egypt.

The American Software Engineering Institute (SEI), affiliated with the renowned Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), awards institutions with the certificates of integrated quality for development on the basis of a number of standards.

These standards help institutions improve their development procedures and practices and define the goals and priorities for continuous improving operations.

The model of the certificate consists of five technical levels and is one of the best international quality models in the field of development.

The chairman of SECC, Dr. Hossam Osman denotes that the acquisition of this certificate by Research and Development department, ascertains the Centerís commitment to international quality standards for implementing development projects in advanced technology fields, such as integrated systems and mobile applications.

Dr. Osman adds that the business strategy, in the near future, targets applying the best procedures and standards, thus improving the Centerís operations.

The said operational improvement supports software development industries and IT services. Moreover, it allows effective participation in international development and research projects. In addition, it expands the services of the Center inside and outside Egypt, Dr. Osman adds.

Established in June 2001, SECC is the fruitful result of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology endeavors and interests to support Egyptian ICT industry. In 2005, the Center became part of ITIDA organizational structure.

The Center now provides evaluation, training, development and technical consultations services for Egyptian companies in the fields of software and IT.

Since its establishment, the Center has offered its services for more than 400 Egyptian companies and trained over 13000 trainees. Recently, it has expanded its services to include the Gulf states and the Middle East region.

SECC R&D department has been established through an intensive orientation and rehabilitation training session held in South Korea for six-month period.

The department aims at transferring advanced technology in the fields of integrated software and mobile applications into Egypt. It also targets increasing local industry share in these fields via providing consultative services, training and technical support for Egyptian companies.

It also provides services to giant institutions among which come the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI), Bahgat Group, Arabi Holding Group and Elsewedy.

Furthermore, the department implements joint projects with international bodies, such as the project currently executed in cooperation with technology companies and universities of high standards from Spain, Italy and Finland.

The project is implemented under the umbrella of the FP7 funded by the European Union (EU).

R&D department aims at bridging the technological gap in the fields of integrated software and mobile applications through developing human capabilities. This is achieved by executing six training paths in the form of workshops, which focus on the practical side, and are located in highly equipped labs.

The outcomes of the department are then registered in specialized studies and researches that aim at supporting the Centerís goals, and highlighting its pioneer role in expanding software development industries and IT services.
