Egypt Partakes in Regional ICT Accessibility Week

    Date published: 27 September 2017

Egypt, represented by Egypt Information and Communication Technology Trust Fund (ICT-TF)— jointly established by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)— is partaking in the Regional ICT Accessibility Week, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UNESCO, in the Arab States, on September 24-28. The event is organized in partnership with a number of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), Egypt ICT Trust Fund, the American University in Cairo (AUC), and others.

The Regional ICT Accessibility Week also marks the celebration on 28 September of UNESCO “International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI)”, which for 2017 UNESCO has adopted the theme “Overcoming Divides and Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. In the case of ITU, this week represents a response to the World Telecommunication Development Conference’s (WTDC) 2014 Arab Regional Initiative entitled “ensuring access to telecommunications/ICTs, in particular for persons with disabilities”.

This week seeks to raise awareness across the Region of the critical role played by information in supporting holistic and sustainable national development. In particular, the week draws attention to the information needs of persons with disabilities and highlights the role that information and communication technologies (ICT) can play in overcoming various information challenges and societal barriers that persons with disabilities face.

In this week, Egypt ICT-Trust Fund will organize an interactive session entitled "Mitigating PwDs Inclusion Challenges Using ICT", on September 27 at AUC premises.

The interactive session will showcase the experience of the "Jobs and Skills for PwDs with Focus on ICT-Based Solutions” Project, and how ICTs can have a significant impact in overcoming the challenges faced by PwDs in society and facilitating the integration of young people with visual and mobility impairments in the labor market. In addition, Alhassan Foundation for Differently Abled Inclusion will, also, present the successes of the project during its implementation. The Foundation was able to provide one of the innovative solutions for the rehabilitation of spinal injury victims through using information technology.

The project— implemented in cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO), launched in September 2014— aims to support the skills of PwDs to increase their chances of finding jobs suited to their needs and abilities in the labor market, especially in the tourism and ICT sectors. The project was implemented in nine governorates, starting with studying the needs of the PwDs community. The appropriate training content for each of the two categories was developed in Arabic in the fields of entrepreneurship skills, computer basics, call center skills, graphic design skills, and computer maintenance skills.

Egypt is one of the oldest members in the ITU and has 16 sector members from the private sector in the union. It is also a founding member of the “Partners to Connect the World” initiative and it chairs the ITU Council Working Group on International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs). Egypt is an active participant in the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) activities and it has succeeded in establishing the first regional subgroup in the Study Group (SG2). This, in turn, further enhances the regional presence of ITU and increases its involvement with developing countries in Africa and the Arab World.

Based in Geneva, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies with 191 member-states and more than 700 sector members and associates. ITU role is to enable the global growth and sustained development of ICT. In addition, ITU organizes international telecom events like WSIS and Telecom Africa.
