| Egypt’s presence at an international level is
fundamental in achieving its objective to participate in the Information
Society. Either by government to government relations, or with regional and
international organizations, Egypt is committed to engaging in international
policy debates, promoting international partnerships, and knowledge sharing.

World Summit on the Information Society - WSIS
The first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society was held in
Geneva, December 2003, and the second in Tunis in November 2005. Egypt's
involvement in the WSIS process began with actively engaging in
setting the international agenda for the ICT sector, including priorities
and actions that should enjoy international attention and consensus. Moving
forwards from this, Egypt is acting effectively upon such recommendations and
following up issues on the national, regional and international levels, as well
as continuously assessing achievements.
WSIS National Working Group
MCIT has formed a working group which includes WSIS national stakeholders, such
as governmental bodies, civil society, private sector and international
agencies to follow up on local implementation of WSIS commitments and produce
an annual report
Egypt@WSIS
MCIT updated its
Egypt@WSIS
website with the objective of creating a forum for all WSIS national
stakeholders, and to keep this community informed of all relevant efforts and
activities. The site also presents information and updates on Egypt's
participation in Arab and regional preparatory processes as well as
international WSIS Preparatory Committees.
Global Alliance for ICT and Development - GAID
The mission of this Alliance is to respond to the need and demand for an
inclusive global forum and platform for cross-sectoral policy dialogue. This is
to be conducted in an open, multi-stakeholder and transparent manner, on the
use of ICT for enhancing the achievement of internationally agreed development
goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, notably the reduction of
poverty.
Egypt’s role in GAID is within one of the mechanisms of the UN to follow up on
WSIS processes within all sectors. MCIT participated in the GAID Meeting in
Malaysia in June 2006.
Since its inception in 2002, the
Helsinki Process on Globalization and Democracy has addressed problems
of global governance and the future of north south relations. From the
beginning, Egypt became part of the group of countries called ‘Friends of the
Helsinki Process’, and at the same time eight tracks were conceived to address
the objectives of the process, each being coordinated by a member country.
Egypt was appointed coordinator for the ICT track at the Helsinki Conference
held in Finland in September 2005. MCIT has since issued a road map for the
track based on the outcomes of the summit, and an annex was added with
suggestions to focus on applications in the field of ICT in education,
e-health, and e-content.
Within the follow up to the international meetings of the Helsinki Process,
consultative group workshops were subsequently held in Aspe (Spain), Helsinki,
and Cairo.
Friends of the Helsinki Process Workshop
September 2006
MCIT hosted the workshop gathering 32 experts from 10 countries of the Friends
of the Helsinki Process to explore ways of cooperation in ICT sector, with the
aim of presenting a model of partnership on the international level. The
meeting focused on best practices to work towards development in the three core
areas above.
