The R&D Centers of Excellence are created in the form of consortiums
consisting of leading local and multinational industrial organizations
operating in Egypt from both the private and public sectors, as well as
Egyptian universities and research institutions. Creating mechanisms for
collaboration between academic and industrial institutions on the local and
international levels is a key feature and goal of MCIT’s R&D centers.
MCIT is starting the initial phase of the R&D initiative by
establishing a number of centers, each with a specialized focus area. The
work in the centers is expected to overlap and cooperation among the
centers is planned to accommodate the areas of common ground of the different
focal areas.

Data Mining and Computer Modeling Center
The Data Mining and Computer Modeling Center of Excellence was created in
2005 with the main purpose of enhancing the R&D capabilities in Egypt to
utilize computer tools and models in order to maximize the analytical,
experimental and developmental capabilities in various sectors.
Data Mining is defined as the extraction of hidden valuable, predictive, or
indicative information in large, possibly distributed, databases. Computer
System Modeling, on the other hand, plays a fundamental role in the analysis,
design and development of complex systems, especially when physical testing and
experimentation are not feasible – or not possible at all.
The integration of Data Mining and System Modeling provides powerful
methodologies for solving large-scale complex systems with massive data
structures.
The Center for Data Mining and Computer Modeling is concerned with promoting
the utilization of such methodologies and helping the industrial and academic
institutions in Egypt to maximize their analytical, experimental and
developmental powers by developing R&D processes.
Wireless Communication and Electronic Design Center
The idea of creating the R&D Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Wireless
Communication and Electronic Design (WCED) started as a plan to initiate two
centres: one for the wireless technology and one for electronic design.
The CoE in Electronic Design is intended to cover the R&D in three main
sectors:
- RF Design
- Digital Design based on standard, off-the-shelf, components,
e.g. DSPs, GPPs,
FPGAs
- system-level design based on standard complete platforms
The R&D in the three technologies will focus on the design of electronic
components, subsystems, and systems with the main objective of
enhancing the local design capabilities. This will enable the development of
low-cost, design-intensive commercial equipment. The resulting design services
can then be outsourced.
On the other hand, the Wireless Technology CoE is intended to cover the design,
development, and deployment of wireless networks based on various
international standards with emphasis on future generation networks that can
assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the educational and governmental
institutions to receive inexpensive and efficient connectivity.
The rapid growth of wireless technology and its application which outperformed
most other technologies known to mankind prompted the idea of combining the two
planned centres into one. The rationale is that the R&D in wireless
technology involves heavy electronic design, and that wireless technology can
also be a perfect area of application for electronic design. The purpose is to
direct the focus of electronic design toward the currently widest and most
promising area of technology.
